Tables won't post in here, but I came across a way to look at using SWOT analysis that I really like, so let me try to describe it.

Make a 3x3 table with big squares. So this will make sense, think of those nine boxes as:

a b c
d e f
g h i

Put all your strengths in b, weaknesses in c, opportunities in d and threats in g.

In e, answer this question:

How could I use one of our strengths to exploit one of our opportunities in the market?

In f, answer this question:

Do any of the opportunities provide a way to counter one of our weaknesses?

In h, answer this question:

Do our strengths show us a way to relax a threat?

and in i, answer this question:

Do any of our threats match up with weaknesses in a way that would tell us not to focus our efforts in a certain area?

Finally, look for any other cross-reference questions you could ask in e, f, h and i.

This made the uses of SWOT more clear to me.

That's a great matrix, Jan. I used it for this "Omega Paw" case last night. Very good way of determining what's an option and what's not. I scanned my doodles and posted them here:

The one thing I forgot was that the MSP I noted in my calcs is Ebert's cost of production - it doesn't include a profit margin. So the $27.47 figure will actually only yield $27.47 - 8.88 = 18.59 profit * 182000 units = $3.3 million only.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Omega Paw, Cal.

I'm working on a chapter summary as a way to study for the quiz Tuesday; send me your email if you'd like a copy (always remembering that the whole text is the ultimate reference, this is just meant to be used along with it because I find it handy to study that way).
